Software Development Engineer, Direct Connect
The AWS Direct Connect team delivers solutions that make it easy for customers to establish a dedicated network connection from their premises to the AWS cloud. These connections help to reduce network costs, increase bandwidth throughput, and provide a more consistent network experience than Internet-based connections. AWS Direct Connect is currently available in more than 140 locations located in 28 countries.
You’ll join a diverse direct connect organisation of software and network development engineers, and multiple other functional teams. As part of the Direct connect availability engineering team you will be responsible for delivering engineering excellence in high-availability systems while delivering critical infrastructure solutions for our global customer base. Our goal is to eliminate human intervention and errors from network engineering services, including initial deployment and sustaining operations. We look for innovative ways to automate and scale our network as we expand, while driving complex issues to resolution.
AWS in general and this business, in particular, operates at very large scale and on critical workloads, so a passion for operational excellence is essential. Candidates must be comfortable working within a fast-moving startup environment and be eager to embrace ownership and accountability.

Key job responsibilities
- You are interested in being part of a high-bar team with global responsibility for the Network Observability software used across all of AWS direct connect infrastructure
-You will design and implement significant components and features that ensure network availability for Direct Connect by partnering with multiple other teams within AWS.
- You will be responsible for implementing solutions that are focused on improving proactive and reactive resiliency of network designs and software systems to provide highly available service for our customers.
- Solving problems at scale excites you.
- You do not implement specs from analysts and architects – you talk to your customers and design solutions to their problems. You automate and innovate.
- You do not push just one technology agenda – you choose the best tool for the problem at hand.
- You enjoy working in a flexible, fast-paced, collaborative team environment.

- Experience designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent
- Experience with full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations Preferred Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
- Experience contributing to the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems
- Knowledge of professional software engineering & best practices for full software development life cycle, including coding standards, software architectures, code reviews, source control management, continuous deployments, testing, and operational excellence
