Backend Engineer (CoreAI)

Requirements

• Strong backend engineering experience building distributed systems and APIs in production
• Proficiency in Java, Python, and Kotlin programming languages
• Experience with cloud infrastructure and container orchestration (e.g., AWS/GCP/Azure, Kubernetes)
• Familiarity with data platforms and streaming technologies (e.g., Kafka, Flink/Spark, object stores, SQL/NoSQL)
• Solid understanding of system design, networking, performance optimization, and observability
• Bachelor’s/Master’s in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
• 4+ years of professional experience

Nice to Have

• Experience in Spark and Hadoop
• Experience with retrieval systems, ranking, recommendations, search, trust & safety, NLP, or generative AI
• Experience with GPU/accelerator orchestration and model optimization
• Experience with privacy, security, and compliance in AI systems
• Prior work at large scale (millions of users, petabyte data, high QPS)

What You'll Be Doing

• Design, build, and operate backend services for AI/ML systems
• Own production-grade APIs and microservices integrating AI capabilities into eBay products
• Implement scalable, cost-efficient, and reliable distributed systems
• Collaborate with ML researchers and product engineers
• Optimize performance and ensure data and model quality
• Contribute to architecture decisions and mentor peers
