Staff Software Engineer - Databases, Tempo | Germany | Remote

Requirements

• Technical leadership with a track record of leading complex initiatives
• Deep systems experience in building and operating distributed data systems
• Strong software craftsmanship and writing clean, performant code
• Experience in Go or similar systems languages
• Operational mindset with experience in production services and SLOs
• Customer focus, pragmatism, and breaking down complex problems
• Leadership through writing and collaboration in a remote, asynchronous environment

Nice to Have

• Experience with tracing, OpenTelemetry, or large-scale observability systems
• Designing query languages, SQL/TraceQL-like engines, or APIs for programmatic consumption
• Experience with columnar storage formats or analytical workloads
• Operating multi-tenant, multi-cell SaaS infrastructure at scale on Kubernetes
• Building for AI/LLM consumers and open-source contribution
• Experience with Grafana, Prometheus, Loki, or Tempo in a previous role
• Experience in a fully remote, globally distributed team

What You'll Be Doing

• Lead multi-quarter technical initiatives
• Own the architecture of core Tempo components
• Design APIs for humans and agents
• Drive operational excellence and partner with Product teams
• Mentor engineers and participate in on-call rotations
• Contribute to open source and engage with the community
