Senior Backend Engineer - Payments

Requirements

• Hands-on experience building payment integrations, bank APIs, payment scheme integrations, or financial messaging formats
• Strong understanding of payment flows end-to-end
• Experience designing and operating highly available, resilient distributed systems
• Expertise in server-side development, ideally Kotlin or Java
• Proficiency with relational databases, cloud environments, and observability tooling
• Strong problem-solving skills and experience owning production payment systems

Nice to Have

• Awareness of payment compliance and regulatory considerations
• Understanding of safeguarding of customer funds and money movement pipelines
• High proficiency with AI-enhanced development tools
• Willingness to deepen AI fluency as Pleo scales AI adoption
• Proven ability to structure complex engineering problems for AI collaboration

• Design, build, and maintain integrations with banks and payment partners
• Own the reliability and correctness of payment flows
• Architect systems resilient to partner outages and network failures
• Lead initiatives to improve system observability and fault tolerance
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams and provide mentorship
