Software Engineer Salary in the Netherlands (2026): Real Numbers by Level and Company

All posts | Mar 17, 2026 | Felix Gerschau

Optiver's L5 engineers in Amsterdam report total compensation of €363,000 on levels.fyi: not a typo, not base salary. The overall market looks nothing like that. The Netherlands median sits at €89,987 across 1,389 data points, and for most engineers outside trading firms and US tech giants, total comp tracks closely to base. The gap between those two worlds is the most important thing to understand about Dutch software engineering pay.

Amsterdam senior figure is from the top locations breakdown on the senior-level page. levels.fyi data is self-reported and skews toward engineers at large tech companies — the figures above are not representative of the full Dutch market, but they are the most reliable public data available for the companies that actually pay €100k+.

Amsterdam outperforms the national figure by roughly €18,000 at the median (€107,098 senior vs €102,655 nationally). Veldhoven, where ASML is headquartered, comes in at €86,814. How the Netherlands compares to the rest of Europe

At the senior level, the Netherlands (€107K TC in Amsterdam) sits within a few thousand euros of Germany (€92,878 nationally) and below Ireland (€122,434 nationally). The Dutch market looks more competitive than the German national figure suggests, but Ireland's concentration of US tech headquarters means Dublin edges ahead once you account for total comp, especially if you land at a firm with equity.

The UK still leads on raw median salary (Ravio pegs the average at ~£70,000 base, or roughly €80,000), but Dutch purchasing power offsets part of that gap, particularly outside Amsterdam. One real differentiator: the Netherlands has Optiver, IMC, and other high-frequency trading firms that push the top of the comp range well above anything available in Germany or Ireland outside of Google-level packages.

Which companies actually pay the most

Optiver (Amsterdam): €170K–€311K+ TC across L3–L5, 24 total data points (per-level counts are below 10 — treat individual level figures as indicative). Heavily bonus-dependent: L5 engineers reported ~€275,000 in bonus against an ~€88,000 base. No equity. If you want RSUs, this isn't it; if you want cash, it's the top of the Dutch market.

IMC (Netherlands): €137K–€185K TC across L1–L4, 30 data points. Same structure as Optiver — cash bonuses (16–34% of TC depending on level), no stock. More consistent across levels than Optiver's wide range. Median reported at €155,287. For the full breakdown of companies clearing €100K in the Netherlands, see the Netherlands €100K companies list.

Uber (Amsterdam): €183,255 average TC across all levels on levels.fyi. Mix of base, bonus, and equity. Amsterdam is Uber's EMEA engineering hub, and packages here reflect that, though sample size is thin and skews toward senior.

Google (Amsterdam): 23 total data points (per-level counts are below 10 — treat as indicative). L3 ~€110K, L4 ~€183K, L5 ~€201K, L6 ~€287K total comp. Equity becomes meaningful from L4 upward (L4: €55K stock/yr, L5: €57K). Median across all levels is €158,562.

Booking.com (Amsterdam): €147,004 average TC on levels.fyi. Booking uses a mix of base, discretionary bonus, and company shares. Data is sparse by level, but senior engineers at Booking.com on NextLevelJobs consistently advertise roles in the €80K–€110K base range with meaningful profit-sharing on top.

Adyen (Amsterdam): Median TC ~€104,955 for the SE level band, max reported at €153,709. Adyen pays in base + options/ESPP with no RSU structure typical of US companies. Competitive for Dutch-headquartered firms; above ASML but below the trading firms.

JetBrains (Amsterdam): €92K–€126K range, median ~€118K across L2–L5 in the Amsterdam area. No equity data reported. Strong brand for IDE engineers; pay is mid-tier for Amsterdam.

ASML (Veldhoven): L6 median €71,058, L7 median €89,467, maximum reported package €112,371. ASML pays respectably for Eindhoven but below the Amsterdam market. Comparing an ASML offer to an Amsterdam big tech offer, the delta is real — often €30K–€50K TC at equivalent experience. The work and career trajectory are quite different though.

What level do you need to hit €100K in the Netherlands?

At the national senior median TC of €102,655, senior level clears €100K. In Amsterdam specifically, the senior median is €107,098. At Adyen, Booking.com, or most other established tech firms in Amsterdam, you'll hit €100K by the time you're comfortably senior.

Outside Amsterdam, in Eindhoven-area companies like NXP or Philips spin-offs, expect to reach senior level before €100K becomes reliably available. ASML's L7 median is €89,467; their top reported package is €112,371.

At trading firms, €100K is achievable much earlier. IMC's L1 (entry by their labeling) median TC is €137K. Optiver starts at roughly €170K+ for their most junior engineers.

For pure base salary: the national senior median base is €97,066, so €100K base requires pushing into the upper half of the senior band at most non-trading companies.

Base vs total comp — what to negotiate

For the vast majority of engineers in the Netherlands, total comp is almost entirely base salary. The levels.fyi median equity is €0 and the median bonus is €0. Only at the 75th percentile does bonus become visible (€6,096/year), and equity doesn't appear until the 90th percentile (€30,040/year). This means Glassdoor base salary figures and TC figures are almost interchangeable for mid-market roles.

The exceptions are US tech firms and trading companies. Google and Uber grant RSUs that vest quarterly over four years; the equity component grows to 30–35% of TC at L5+. Trading firms like Optiver and IMC use discretionary year-end bonuses instead of equity — a bonus that can exceed base salary at senior levels, but varies significantly year to year and is never guaranteed.

Negotiation norms here differ from US practice. Dutch employers typically make a single offer and expect modest counters (5–10%), not the multi-round negotiations common at American tech firms. For roles at Google or Uber's Amsterdam offices, comp decisions are often made by US-based teams and respond to US-style negotiation tactics. At Dutch-headquartered companies like Booking.com or Adyen, push harder on the equity and bonus components than on base: those lines are more flexible.

Do you need the 30% ruling to reach €100K net in the Netherlands?
No, but it helps significantly. At the senior national median TC of €102,655, you'd net roughly €60,000–€65,000 without the ruling. With the ruling, net take-home rises to approximately €73,000–€78,000 on the same gross. Use the estimator above to calculate your specific situation.
What is a good software engineer salary in the Netherlands?
For Amsterdam, €100K+ TC is the senior-level median. At mid-level, €75,000–€85,000 base is solid. Anything above €157,566 (90th percentile) puts you in the top 10% of the Dutch market. At trading firms, total comp above €150K is achievable earlier in your career.
