What you'll be doing

Design, build and evolve software that powers automated news and insights at significant scale
Take ownership of projects from early ideas and technical design through implementation, testing and production
Help modernise distributed content-generation platform, improving performance, flexibility, scalability and maintainability
Build tools to improve observability and data governance, making it easier to trace data from source to publication and understand issues
Develop intelligent systems to identify anomalies in content while controlling false positives
Contribute to AI-powered tools assisting editors and reporters, focusing on accuracy, evaluation and user experience
Collaborate with Newsroom, Product and Engineering teams to translate ambiguous needs into practical technical solutions
Improve reliability, testing and operability of systems and contribute ideas for better platform and engineering practices

Requirements

4+ years of experience developing production software in Python, Java, C++ or similar programming languages
Strong software engineering fundamentals with experience building reliable, maintainable and well-tested production systems
Experience designing, building or evolving distributed systems with a focus on architectural trade-offs
Ability to break down problems, consider trade-offs and work toward practical solutions
Collaborative approach and ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical colleagues
Sense of ownership and curiosity about the systems you work on
Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, similar field, or equivalent practical experience

Experience building or operating high-throughput event-driven systems
Experience with event-driven architectures or messaging technologies such as Kafka or RabbitMQ
Experience with observability, data lineage or data governance
Experience building applications using LLMs, including prompting, evaluation or testing of AI systems
Experience with TypeScript, React or other frontend technologies
Interest in improving engineering practices, sharing knowledge and learning from others
