Data Engineer II - (Global Discovery, Consumer)

What you'll be doing

  • Own a well-defined scope of batch pipelines end-to-end, building new Python workflows and improving existing ones for reliability, readability, and testability.
  • Shape the use of Airflow and dbt to define, build, and operate the Unified Data Layer while keeping BigQuery workloads efficient and cost-aware.
  • Ensure workflow reliability using tiers, SLOs, and runbooks and troubleshoot production issues.
  • Own alerts and enhance the maturity of data quality checks, business-logic validation, and testing suites.
  • Build self-serve tooling that enables analysts and data scientists to create analytical layers with less effort.
  • Adapt codebases and workflows for agentic tooling to improve team productivity without compromising quality.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of data engineering experience building production data workflows primarily in Python.
  • Advanced analytical and OLAP SQL skills, ideally with BigQuery, including query performance tuning and cost management.
  • Production experience with Airflow and dbt, including system reliability, data quality monitoring, and alerting.
  • Daily use of coding agents (e.g. Claude Code) to scaffold DAGs and dbt models, with rigorous verification and full ownership of outputs.
  • Strong engineering practices including unit and integration testing, code reviews, observability, and clear, maintainable code.
  • Curiosity about business data, the ability to analyze data logic, explain results, and collaborate closely with analysts and data scientists.

Nice to haves

  • Experience supporting recommendation, search, or machine learning data workflows.
  • Exposure to stream processing technologies such as Flink or Kafka and understanding of batch vs. streaming trade-offs.
  • Experience building self-serve data tooling for analysts or non-engineering users.
  • Experience building custom agents or agent-based tooling for data engineering tasks.
