Lead Site Reliability Engineer

Requirements

  • Deep SRE experience including SLI and SLO definition, error budget management, and incident response ownership through blameless retrospectives.
  • Fluency with AI as an engineering tool: building agents and automation, working with MCP servers or equivalents, and understanding when human involvement is needed.
  • Strong software engineering skills in Python, writing tested and maintainable code that others can run and extend.
  • Experience with observability tools such as OpenTelemetry and Datadog.
  • Proficiency with AWS at scale and Kubernetes-based platforms managed through Infrastructure as Code.

Nice to Haves

  • Experience with Istio, Crossplane, and ArgoCD (training provided).
  • Experience running ML or AI workloads in production, including model serving or feature pipelines.
  • Experience as a sole delivery owner and understanding the responsibilities involved.

What you'll be doing

  • Build and embed the Site Reliability Engineering function, making reliability, observability, and operational excellence core concerns.
  • Act as the dedicated SRE supporting roughly 120 engineers, owning frameworks, instrumentation, and AI tooling to enable team service ownership and on-call responsibilities.
  • Improve alert quality, create executable runbooks, and enhance diagnostics to enable issue resolution without direct SRE involvement.
  • Advocate for reliability with Product and Engineering using data-driven decisions to prioritize platform health alongside delivery commitments.
  • Define and implement reliability standards such as SLIs, SLOs, error budgets, and production readiness criteria with measurable adoption.
  • Automate standards enforcement through guardrails in CI, reliability checks on pull requests, and safe defaults in shared infrastructure.
  • Develop SRE capabilities on Zego’s AI platform by extending MCP servers and agents, ensuring machine-readable runbooks and structured telemetry.
  • Own observability practice focusing on instrumentation design, signal quality, cardinality, and cost management.
  • Enhance incident response processes from detection to retrospective, using AI to reduce toil and focus responder effort on judgement.
  • Measure and reduce toil with tooling that others can operate independently.

Perks and Benefits

  • Market-competitive salary with annual reviews based on function benchmarks.
  • Annual performance bonus tied to company performance and personal contribution.
  • Share options providing a real stake in the company and its future.
  • Private medical insurance.
  • Generous pension, holiday allowance, and £1,000 yearly budget for commuting or learning.
