Requirements

10+ years of professional software development experience beyond internships
10+ years designing and architecting large-scale distributed systems focusing on design patterns, reliability, and scaling
Relevant experience with high-performance storage, time-series/metrics systems, query engines, or database internals
Experience setting technical direction across multiple teams and delivering significant improvements to large-scale systems

Nice to Haves

Deep familiarity with time-series data, metrics systems, and the Prometheus and OpenTelemetry ecosystems
Experience with S3-based storage, stream processing technologies like Kinesis or Kafka, and columnar data formats such as Parquet
Experience with PromQL or other time-series query languages, query planning, storage compaction, and large-scale performance optimization
Systems programming skills in Rust, Java, C++, or similar languages
Experience influencing architecture across organizations and mentoring senior engineers

Setting the multi-year technical vision and architecture for the CloudWatch metrics platform including query execution, tiered and long-term storage, and data ingestion
Owning complex design decisions on correctness, availability, performance, and cost for a globally available 24x7 service
Leading the evolution toward intelligent, adaptive ingestion and establishing the platform as the default OpenTelemetry metrics foundation across Amazon
Working backwards from customer needs to influence the roadmap and impact how millions of developers and SREs monitor their systems
Raising engineering standards through design and code reviews, operational excellence, and addressing complex production issues with durable fixes
Mentoring and growing senior engineers and representing CloudWatch metrics in AWS-wide architecture forums and the broader OpenTelemetry/Prometheus community
Handling hard architectural trade-offs, deep-diving into performance issues, reviewing designs for novel challenges, and collaborating with product and leadership on goals and roadmap iterations
