Software Engineer Salary in London (2026): Senior Pay by Employer and Level
All posts | Oct 22, 2026 | Felix GerschauLast checked: October 2026
Two numbers describe software engineer pay in London, and they are about £27,000 apart. The Office for National Statistics puts the median base salary of a full-time programmer or software developer in London at £75,296 (ASHE 2025, April 2025). On levels.fyi, the median total compensation reported by software engineers in Greater London is £102,007 (3,609 reports, October 2026). The first counts everyone in the occupation; the second counts stock and bonus and skews to the US tech employers whose staff bother to submit. If you are reading this to decide whether to take, or move for, a London engineering job, the second figure is closer to your market, and this post is about what sits behind it.
London is also where UK pay concentrates: the ONS median for the whole UK is £56,914, and on levels.fyi London's £108,252 compares with £98,684 in Cambridge and £80,365 in Leeds, the next two locations on its list. The UK salary guide covers the country; this one stays in the capital. Pounds throughout, with euros at the ECB rate of 9 October 2026.
Right now the board lists 1,124 open roles in London at employers verified to pay senior engineers €100k or more.

The numbers at a glance
The table puts the two sources side by side. Read the ONS row as the floor, the levels.fyi rows as the market you are aiming at, and the gap between them as the premium for working at a company that pays in stock.

Note what the spread says: a quarter of the engineers reporting to levels.fyi in London earn less than £74k in total, which is about the ONS median base. The site is not only big tech. But a quarter earn more than £142k, and that is the quarter where the US tech employers, the trading firms and the AI labs sit. Which group you end up in has far more to do with the employer than with your years of experience, which is why the rest of this post is organised by employer.
What employers on this board post right now
The salary guides on this site lead with the pay that employers publish in their own job ads, because it is the one figure nobody self-selected into. In October 2026, the 190 senior software-engineering listings in the UK on this board with a posted pay range (from 19 companies) have a median base pay of €119k, about £101k, with the middle half between €115k and €151k. These are base salaries, so no stock or bonus. They are also UK-wide rather than London-only: the board does not yet break posted pay down by city. In practice the employers below run their UK engineering from London offices, with some roles remote within the UK, so treat the figures as a close proxy for London at the upper end of the market. The board only lists employers chosen for paying senior engineers €100k or the local equivalent, so this is not a national median either.
Wise is the largest lister, with 49% of the listings; without it the median is €119k. By employer, for those with at least two listings; the table shows the eight highest medians, which is why the largest lister is not in it:
| Employer | Median base pay | Lowest to highest posted | Listings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anthropic | €378k | €265k–€466k | 4 |
| OpenAI | €280k | €229k–€330k | 2 |
| xAI | €218k | €126k–€309k | 4 |
| Affirm | €170k | €142k–€198k | 3 |
| Flo Health | €152k | €112k–€212k | 2 |
| Attio | €147k | €124k–€177k | 2 |
| Monzo | €133k | €77k–€224k | 17 |
| CircleCI | €120k | €90k–€140k | 3 |
The AI labs at the top post base salaries that the rest of the market only reaches in total compensation, and they post them in the ad. Monzo is the more useful benchmark for a fintech senior role: a median base around £112k from 17 listings, before share options. Pay by level at the big employers
levels.fyi publishes compensation by level for each employer's London office, and those level tables are where the money is actually decided. The figures below are its London averages by level, October 2026, with the split between base, yearly stock and bonus where the site gives one. A "senior" title maps to different levels at different companies, and the difference between two adjacent levels is routinely £60,000 or more, so check the level on your offer, not the title.

Two things stand out. First, base salary is remarkably similar across the three US tech employers at senior level: £121k at Google L5, £122k at Meta E5, £119k at Amazon L6. The difference in total, from £184k to £253k, is almost all stock. Second, the bank pays differently: JPMorgan's Vice President level, the usual landing point for a senior engineer, averages £149k with most of it in base and cash bonus, and no equity cliff to think about.
Above all of these sit the trading firms. levels.fyi's London page ranks Citadel first by median total compensation at £315,792, ahead of Meta (£215,658) and Apple (£177,085). Jane Street, Hudson River Trading and Qube Research & Technologies hire in the same tier; the UK salary guide has Jane Street's ranges and the London hiring page has the open roles.
Where £100k becomes realistic
In total compensation, £100,000 is an entry- or mid-level number at the large US employers in London, not a senior one. The first level at which each employer's London average clears it:
- Meta: E4 (Software Engineer), £146k total, of which £94k base
- Google: L3 (SWE II, entry level), £121k total, of which £85k base
- Amazon: L5 (SDE II), £139k total, of which £101k base
- JPMorgan Chase: 603 (Vice President), £149k total
In base salary, £100,000 is a senior number almost everywhere: Meta E4 clears it in total but not in base (£94k), and Google L4 (£104k) and Amazon L5 (£101k) only just do. That distinction matters twice in London. The Skilled Worker visa counts base salary only (below), and mortgage lenders weight base far more heavily than stock. Outside big tech, the UK salary guide puts senior London base at roughly £85,000–£100,000 with total compensation of £95,000–£110,000, and the posted-pay table above shows where the upper end of that sits in October 2026. For the employers that clear the bar, the UK £100k companies guide is the list.
What £100k is worth in London: tax and rent
Gross pay is the number you negotiate; net pay and rent decide whether London beats Amsterdam or Berlin for you. Income tax in England for 2026/27 is 20% from £12,570 to £50,270, 40% to £125,140 and 45% above that; employee National Insurance is 8% between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% above. There are no separate social contributions beyond that, apart from the workplace pension you are auto-enrolled into. On £100,000 that leaves about £68,600 a year, roughly £5,700 a month. Try your own offer:
UK net salary estimator
2026 income tax + National Insurance. Personal allowance taper above £100K.
Estimate only. Actual net depends on tax class, health insurance choice, and personal circumstances.
Two London-specific traps. The personal allowance is withdrawn at £1 for every £2 earned above £100,000, so between £100,000 and £125,140 the effective marginal rate is 60%; many engineers in that band push salary into pension contributions (salary sacrifice) or take the increase as equity instead. And the thresholds are frozen until April 2031, so each pay rise moves more of your salary into the 40% band; a £5,000 raise in London is worth about £2,900 in hand.
Rent is the other half. The ONS puts the average private rent in London at £2,332 a month in August 2026, up 3.5% in a year, against £1,400 across the UK. That is about £27,984 a year, or 41% of the take-home on a £100,000 salary for an average flat, before council tax and bills. On a senior big-tech package of £200,000+ the same flat is closer to a fifth of net pay, which is the practical reason the level tables above matter more than the medians.
London against the other European hubs
For a senior engineer choosing between cities, London's ceiling is the highest in Europe outside Zurich, while its senior benchmark sits close to Dublin's and Amsterdam's. The benchmark senior figures from our country guides, in euros:
- Switzerland: ~€161,000–€204,000 (CHF 150K–190K) (Senior, Zurich)
- UK: ~€112,000–€130,000 (£95K–£110K) (Senior, London)
- Ireland: €122,434 (base €99,425) (Senior, national median)
- Netherlands: €102,655 (Amsterdam €107,098) (Senior, national median)
- Germany: €92,878 (base €89,245) (Senior, national median)
Zurich pays more in cash and taxes less, but the B permit is quota-based and the hardest in Europe to get. Amsterdam's 30% ruling closes much of the net-pay gap with London for the first five years. Dublin has the same US tech employers but far fewer trading firms and AI labs at the top. The comparison of Amsterdam, Berlin, London, Dublin and Zurich weighs salary against visa difficulty and rent for each, and software engineer salary in Europe has the posted base pay for all ten countries we cover.
Moving to London from abroad: the Skilled Worker visa
If you are coming from outside the UK, the route is the Skilled Worker visa. Your employer must hold a Home Office sponsor licence; the Home Office publishes the register, so you can check a company before applying. The salary rule is the higher of the general threshold, £41,700 a year, and the going rate for your occupation code; for programmers and software development professionals (SOC 2134) the going rate is £54,700 under the rules in force since April 2026, so that is the number a standard application must clear. New entrants (under 26, or switching from a Student or Graduate visa) can qualify at £40,000. Every figure in this post that clears £100,000 clears the bar, but it is base salary that counts, so at the trading firms and AI labs make sure the base alone does.
Budget for the fees: the visa itself costs £819 for up to three years or £1,618 for longer when applying from outside the UK (fees from April 2026), plus the Immigration Health Surcharge of £1,035 for each year of the visa, paid up front. Some employers reimburse both, many do not, so ask in the first recruiter call. Processing takes 3–8 weeks. The UK visa sponsorship guide covers the process step by step and lists the companies on this board that sponsor; the official GOV.UK page has the current rules.
Using these numbers in a negotiation
- Anchor on the level, not the title. Look up the employer's London page on levels.fyi, find the level on your offer, and compare the total, not the base. If the offer sits below the average for that level, say so with the figure.
- Ask what the base is before anything else if you need a visa or a mortgage; a package that is 45% stock can fail both tests while looking generous.
- Negotiate the vehicle, not only the number, once base passes £100,000: pension contributions above the 3% minimum, a larger equity grant or a sign-on bonus are all taxed more kindly than base in the 60% band.
- Run two processes at once. The trading firms and AI labs move in weeks; the large US employers take months. Start the slow ones first so the offers land together.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average software engineer salary in London?
It depends on who is counted. The ONS puts the median base pay of full-time programmers and software developers in London at £75,296 (ASHE 2025, April 2025), against £56,914 across the UK. On levels.fyi, where reports skew towards large tech employers and include stock and bonus, the median total compensation for software engineers in Greater London is £102,007 (3,609 reports, October 2026). Both are right; one describes the whole occupation and the other the employers most engineers reading this are targeting.
What does a senior software engineer earn in London?
At the large US tech employers, senior level (Google L5, Meta E5, Amazon L6) averages £184k–£253k in total compensation on levels.fyi, of which roughly half is base salary. The senior software-engineering listings on this board with a posted range in the UK, which is curated for employers paying €100k+, show a median base of €119k, about £101k. Outside big tech and trading, senior base pay in London is more often in the £85k–£110k range, which the UK salary guide covers.
Is £100k a good salary in London?
It puts you well above the median for the occupation (£75,296 base) and around the levels.fyi median for total compensation. After income tax and National Insurance, £100,000 leaves about £68,600 a year, or £5,700 a month; the average London rent of £2,332 (ONS, August 2026) takes about 41% of that. Between £100,000 and £125,140 the personal allowance is withdrawn, so each extra pound is taxed at an effective 60%: negotiate pension contributions or equity rather than base in that band.
Which companies pay software engineers the most in London?
Trading firms and the AI labs. On levels.fyi, Citadel has the highest median total compensation for London software engineers at £315,792, ahead of Meta (£215,658) and Apple (£177,085). Among the employers on this board, Anthropic and OpenAI post the highest base pay on their UK listings. Jane Street, Hudson River Trading and Qube Research & Technologies are in the same tier; the UK salary guide has Jane Street's ranges.
What salary do I need for a UK Skilled Worker visa as a software engineer?
The higher of the general threshold, £41,700 a year, and the going rate for your occupation code. For programmers and software development professionals (SOC 2134) the going rate is £54,700, so that is the figure a standard application must clear; new entrants can qualify at £40,000. Only guaranteed base salary counts, not stock or bonus. Any £100k offer clears it. Processing takes 3–8 weeks.
