What you'll be doing

• Develop secure, well-tested, performant features and improvements using Ruby on Rails and GraphQL.
• Work through complex requirements and legacy constraints to deliver clear solutions while maintaining system reliability.
• Design and maintain backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic for intuitive source code workflows.
• Collaborate across functions and teams asynchronously and synchronously, involving domain experts as needed.
• Use AI agents to accelerate delivery without sacrificing quality and critically review their output.
• Write maintainable code that follows GitLab’s standards and participate in constructive code reviews.
• Enhance system reliability by monitoring production metrics, participating in Tier 2 on-call duties, troubleshooting incidents, performing root cause analysis, and improving observability and resiliency.
• Share knowledge through code review, documentation, and everyday collaboration while learning from others.

Requirements

• Professional experience building backend web applications, services, or APIs, with proficiency in Ruby and GraphQL.
• Understanding of relational databases, SQL, data modeling, caching, background processing, and backend performance optimization.
• Experience with full-stack development supporting user-facing workflows and underlying systems.
• Experience writing backend unit and integration tests and familiarity with the testing pyramid, Git, and collaborative code reviews.
• Clear written and spoken English communication skills suitable for remote, asynchronous work environments.
• Ability to manage priorities, work through ambiguity, take ownership, and seek guidance when necessary.
• Experience using AI coding agents to accelerate software development with critical assessment of their output.
